One Direction band member Zayn Malik has announced that he is quitting the boy band for good. The 22-year-old Bradford born star said in a statement that he had made the decision after much soul-searching, but had gone with the difficult decision as he had to do what was ‘best for him’.
A statement by Zayn on the band’s website read, “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.”
“I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
The singer who is engaged to Little Mix star Perry Edwards had flown home last week during the boys’ world tour citing ‘stress’ as the reason. It’s not clear if Malik who to Fame alongside his band mates Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan said he now wanted to live a ‘normal life as a 22 year old’.
While the rest of the band said they wished him all the best and would carry on as a four man unit, we’re not sure how Zayn’s hopes for a ‘normal’ life would play out when you used to part of what has become the biggest boy band of the last two decades.
Fans of the band (mainly teenage girls) have been known to go wild for the boys during concerts and whenever or wherever they make an appearance. Their successive hits including ‘Best Song Ever’ and ‘What Makes You Beautiful’, have made One Direction a global phenomenon selling millions of records worldwide.
One Direction was formed five years ago during the X Factor by Simon Cowell. Despite coming 4th in the series, they have gone on to become Britain’s biggest export enjoying tremendous success in the US and winning several awards. The man behind the success of the hugely popular band quickly sought to reassure fans that the rest of the band would carry on after the internet exploded over the news that Zayn was leaving.
Cowell said, “Since I first met Zayn in 2010, I have grown very, very fond – and immensely proud – of him. I have seen him grow in confidence and I am truly sorry to see him leave. As for One Direction, fans can rest assured that Niall, Liam, Harry and Louis are hugely excited about the future of the band.”
