On Saturday, 16th June, Nigerian musician Wizkid became the first Nigerian artist to walk the Dolce & Gabbana runway at the luxury brand’s Spring Summer ’19 fashion show in Milan.
Wizkid brought his usual swag to the runway, walking alongside British model Naomi Campbell who flew into the Italian city with the 27 year old singer. A video clip on the D&G Instagram feed showed last minute touches being made to the black and gold embroidered custom made outfit worn by Wizkid, which was accessorised with a bejewelled mask.
While Wizkid was flying the Nigerian flag in Italy, he wasn’t alone with British Nigerian rapper Tinnie Tempah and Nigerian model Davidson Obennebo also walking during the show.
Dolce & Gabbana join the likes of Burberry, who have also tried to take advantage of the diversity and rising influence of African millenials to reach a wider audience, beyond western and Asian shores.
Nigerians are some of the most fashionable people in the world, with a fetish for luxury brands. It isn’t uncommon to see brands like D&G, Gucci and Burberry being worn by people of all classes (both real and counterfeit). It’s about time luxury brands recognised the potential in the African market.
