Viacom, owners of MTVBase Africa and BET have extended their coverage to the African continent. The media company launched BET Africa on the 2nd of April via South African cable network DStv. The new channel will screen hit US dramas ‘Being Mary Jane’, ‘The Wendy Williams Show’ and ‘The Real Husbands of Hollywood’ in addition to locally produced programmes.
Over the last few years, BET America has shown a mix of programmes produced in Africa like the HIV drama Shuga in addition to featuring popular African celebrities like D’Banj and M.I.
The new 24-hour channel will provide an uplifting blend of locally produced and international programming from a variety of genres, including drama, family-friendly sitcoms, stand-up comedy, documentaries, talk shows, awards specials, reality series, gospel music, and more.
Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks Africa said, “VIMN Africa is delighted to announce the launch of this new BETchannel – our tenth channel and multimedia entertainment brand in Africa. BET will connect viewers with international trends, talent and thought leaders, whilst simultaneously celebrating Africa’s talent and creativity. This evolution for the BET brand on the continent significantly broadens our general entertainment offering and provides a dynamic and compelling new destination for viewers.”
While the channel will air on DStv channel 129, which is only available to African subscribers, here’s hoping the channel would make its way to the UK soon.
