A few years ago, many had ever heard of Nigerian artist Wizkid let alone buy his record. Fast forward 2014 and he is now arguably, one of the biggest if not THE biggest name in Afrobeats in Nigeria or even Africa today.
Wizzy (real name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun) with the help of his mentor Banky Wellington has carved a niche for himself with contemporary lyrics and videos which have set him apart from others on the scene, and there are many others.
Davido, Olamide and May D are just some of the others currently on the scene who have gone from relative anonymity to superstardom in a short period of time.
Wizkid’s astronomical rise arguably encouraged other young artists to test the waters in Nigeria’s bustling and highly lucrative Entertainment industry and many young and upcoming artists see him as an inspiration to keep trying to make their dreams come true.
Now signed to Akon’s Konvict music, the 11-year-old from Surulere who started out forming a band with his church mates and watching other African greats such as 2Face Idibia in the studio has come full circle in his young but promising career.
He recently supported Tinie Tempah during his 2014 tour with the pair calling each other ‘brothers’ in reference to their shared Nigerian heritage.
The 23 year old’s upcoming album is being eagerly anticipated and he has been teasing fans with some envy inducing photos of himself hanging out in the studio with what is undoubtedly some of the biggest names in music right now including Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Akon.
We can’t wait to see what they come up with out of that studio.
