Spa Review: Sophia Kupse, The Muscle Whisperer

On arrival at Sophia’s Harley Street Clinic, I was greeted warmly by Sophia herself and asked to fill some forms regarding any pre-existing health conditions. She then further discussed with me issues regarding my health in general, my diet patterns, exercise patterns etc as a mini consultation. Sophia made the experience very comfortable for me from the very beginning, so it’s no surprise that she’s been a hit with celebrities and high profile clients including actress and model Liv Tyler.

With over 20 years in the business, Sophia has created a revolutionary treatment that approaches back pain in a unique way, by asking the question of how we develop these pains in the first instant. Is it through physical impact or emotional and psychological stress?

As we went along, Sophia explained the connections between the various parts of the bodies for example the lower back and the abdomen and why we develop certain aches due to our daily habits. Furthermore, She elaborated on hormone production for example, adrenaline after exercise and how these processes impacts pain.

Personally, I have a history of lower back pain and recently started working out regularly to address the issue. I found Sophia’s insight extremely useful, and this is even before the massage had started.

Once on the massage table, Sophia started with essential oils and pinpointed areas of the back and described which areas are affected by which part of our daily life, and overall our life so far. For example, the lower back being a representation of our childhood. Sophia draws her knowledge from Eastern medicine and provides this information in simpler terminology for the client to understand.

One thing I really liked about Sophia was that I didn’t get the impression that she is looking to give a massage in silence just so you can come back for more and more. She provides you with the information so you can self sustain your body and look after it in a better manner. You get the feeling she is not just providing you a temporary fix, but rather a long-term solution. Further more, she will also help you understand how and why meditation may help and facilitate relief for back aches and overall well-being.

Sophia further worked with hot volcanic stone and ice marbles, using her ‘Langellotti Tri-Therapy’. This provided extreme comfort as it allowed the muscle to relax and release stress. She will tell you all of this as she goes! It is all very insightful. She is also a great listener, and a session with her will feel more like a cross between physiotherapy and psychotherapy.

The volcanic marbles she uses also hold spiritual healing qualities and she works with your energy, tapping into different events of your life, for example, she can read where a tense area is because of family argument or financial stress. This is no hocus-pocus though, as Sophia will explain: this is because “she reads into muscle memory and will explain how this work scientifically.” She is a member of the Complimentary Therapist Association, a leading professional body representing sport, spa and complimentary therapist in UK.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience, which I will be sure to book again. I would highly recommend it as in the aftermath, I am feeling extremely relaxed and feel a load off myself. I can see why she is ‘The Muscle Whisperer’!
