Shock in South Africa as Orlando Pirates Captain Senzo Meyiwa is shot dead

Killed over a cell phone during bungled burglary


South African football star and a man many referred to as a ‘hero’ Senzo Meyiwa was killed by unknown gunmen on Sunday night in what is thought to be a failed burglary attempt.

South African police reports state that the incident happened while Meyiwa was visiting his girlfriend, South African pop singer Kelly Khumalo when two men entered the house and started demanding for mobile phones and money. Meyiwa is though to have been shot while trying to protect his girlfriend after one of the gun men pointed a gun at her. The gunmen- three in number fled the scene after the shot was fired.

Meyiwa was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital from a bullet wound to his chest, plunging his family and the whole country into mourning.

South African police have vowed to bring the perpetrators to book and the country’s president Jacob Zuma has already expressed his condolences to his family saying in a statement released on Monday, “We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career. Words cannot express the nation’s shock at this loss.”

The force broke protocol to announce the footballer’s death on Sunday night, taking to Twitter to make a formal statement.

Many have taken to Twitter to express shock over the crime as tributes poured in from team mates calling the 27-year-old ‘humble’ and a ‘strong person’.

Meyiwa was the goal keeper and captain of the Orlando Pirates football club and also played for the national team Bafana Bafana.

He has a baby daughter with girlfriend Kelly Khumalo and is also married to Mandhisa Mkhise.
