The Grand slam champ and current women’s Tennis number one is the April cover star for Vogue US. In a video released by the fashion bible, Serena shows that not only can she conquer the Tennis court on whatever surface, she can also take on the reigning queen of pop and in style too.
Pumping her beats to Beyoncé’s viral hit 7/11, the 33-year-old busts some moves on the tennis court using her ball as a prop. She then takes on choreographed moves to the song which Beyoncé performed with backing female dancers. This time, Serena’s back up dancers consisted of a mixture of buff young men and octogenarians on the golf course.
She seemed like she had a ball and we thoroughly enjoyed watching it too.
Now about that cover.
Shot by Annie Leibovitz, the sports queen looks fierce and beautiful as she becomes the first black sports woman to grace the cover of the magazine solo. Showing off her enviable figure in all the right places, her spread shows a natural, body confident Serena wearing couture pieces and looking rather fabulous. So fabulous in fact, that she announced her cover on Instagram wearing a sexy bikini holding said coveted piece as she relaxed on a lounger.
First Jordan Dunn’s March cover of British Vogue, then a month long fashion diary on Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie, and now Serena Williams on the cover of American Vogue. The magazine’s efforts at recognising the contriubtions of amazing women of colour hasn’t gone unnoticed by us. More please.
