The mother of three year old Mikaeel Kular has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing her own son.

Rosdeep Adekoya, 34, has admitted that she had repeatedly beaten Mikaeel  last month and then wrapping his body in a duvet cover, stuffing it in a suitcase and driving 25 miles Kirkcaldy, Fife, to hide it in woodland.

She was initially charged with murder but pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide.

Mikaeel had died on the night of 14th January from injuries inflicted on him two days ago following a family day out in a Nando’s restaurant.

The final cause of death was found to be “blunt force abdominal trauma”.

The High Court at Edinburgh had heard that Adekoya’s internet history revealed searches including “I find it hard to love my son”, “Why am I so aggressive with my son” and “Get rid of bruises”.

Judge Lord Glenne told Adekoya that what she did was “cruel and inexcusable”, adding for effect,

“Striking a child even once is bad enough. Striking him heavily and repeatedly with hand and fist when he was sick again and again simply beggars belief. Mikaeel was by all accounts healthy, happy little boy. By your actions, however unintended, you have not only robbed Mikaeel of his young life but left a gaping hole in the lives of all who loved him.”

However Lord Glennie did say he accepted Adekoya’s remorse as genuine and heartfelt.

“You are clearly an intelligent and articulate young woman.” He said. “There is no history of violence by you towards any of your children. That makes it all the more difficult to understand your actions.”

“I do not suppose that you really understand why you did what you did.”

Rosdeep Adekoya has been jailed for 11 years.
