Prominent Nigerian Human Rights Activist Bamidele Aturu Has Died Aged 49

Mr Bamidele Aturu, a Lagos based human rights activist and lawyer has died. He died on Wednesday of high blood pressure at the age of 49.

It was reported that he was rushed to the Lagos state university teaching hospital at the early hours of yesterday, but was later in the day confirmed dead by a medical personnel.

Aturu who was the principal of Bamidele Aturu and company in Lagos obtained a first degree in law from the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-ife, Osun state.

A co-lawyer of Aturu who is also based in Lagos Mr Festus Keyamo expressed shock at the death of Aturu, saying he is yet to confirm his death.

Former chairman of the Nigerian bar association Mr Monday Ubami described the late Aturu as the best Nigerian activist who was not particular at gaining political appointment or attracting public attention.

Also expressing shock after receiving news of his death, Mr Debo Adeniran, chairman coalition against corrupt leaders , The chairman of the civil society of network against corruption, Mr. Lanre Suraj and Mr. Chino Obiagwu the national coordinator, legal defence and assistance project said in different text messages to a Punch Nigeria correspondent that they were dumb founded at the news of his death.
