Oh no! Mo Farah collapsed at the end of the New York Half Marathon today, even though he says he doesn’t even remember passing out.
The Olympic Gold medallist took to twitter after the incident to reassure fans (including us) that he’s okay. In his tweet, he says: Hi guys..I’m doing ok..thanks for the concern.. disappointed with today.. I gave 110%.. couldn’t do any more… sorry guys….
The father of three who admitted that he was seeing stars for most of the last four laps, lost consciousness after crossing the finishing line and had to be helped into a wheel chair where paramedics attended to him.
In an interview, Farah told reporters,
“When I fell, I fell pretty hard. I told myself “don’t rush” but when I saw the gap, the gap was big.
‘Conditions here today were very cold. London won’t be as cold as this.
‘It would have been nice to win today, but he (Geoffrey Mutai) is a good athlete. Nothing changes for London – I will just keep training.”
Despite his fall, Mo still pushed himself to finish the race, coming in at a commendable second considering what he went through.
The 30 year old lamented that he was training so hard, he didn’t see his wife and three young kids; step daughter Rihanna and twins Aisha and Amani as often as he should and worried that they wouldn’t recognise him when they next saw him….(aww)!
He told The Daily Mail, “It’s what it takes to be a champion. I wish I could just sit in my house and do stuff with them, but I wouldn’t have achieved what I have. My kids are lucky to have a nice place and we can buy them nice stuff. I guess it takes sacrifice to be a champion.”
You’ve said it all Mo, you’ve said it all. Here’s wishing him a speedy recovery so he can knock ’em out in the forthcoming London Marathon.
