Nurse Who Treated Liberian Traveller Is First Nigerian Victim To Die Of Ebola Virus

One of the Nurses who treated the American – Liberian, Patrick Sawyer who was infected with Ebola Virus Disease [EVD] has been confirmed dead by the Federal Government .She died of Ebola Virus on Wednesday as a result of the contact she had with Sawyer when he came to Nigeria.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu while speaking in a news conference held in Abuja where he also stated that other five  health  practitioners who took part in treating Sawyer  has also been infected with the disease.

He said the other five infected persons are being treated at the isolation ward in Lagos.

The Minister then announced that Prof O Onajole of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital has been appointed as the Director, Communication and Community Mobilization for Ebola Virus Disease and he will be based in Lagos.

He then promised that he and his colleague in the Ministry of Information will visit Lagos within the week to access the situation.

Nigerian authorities have stepped up measures to prevent the spread of the epidemic with checks at airports stepped up to screen travellers who may be showing symptoms of the disease.

Radio broadcasts and TV announcements have also been disseminating information about the disease and how to prevent it to the over 20 million people who live in the country in the hope of stemming the tide.
