News reaching us from LA times is that Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is to film and produce Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie’s latest novel ‘Americanah’.
The news was revealed in a statement released by the actress after days of speculation. The 31-year-old told the paper, “It is such an honor to have the opportunity to bring Ms. Adichie’s brilliant book to the screen.
“Page after page I was struck by Ifemelu and Obinze’s stories, whose experiences as African immigrants are so specific and also so imminently relatable. It is a thrilling challenge to tell a truly international story so full of love, humor and heart.”
Nyong’o will be working with 12 years a slave co-star Brad Pitt’s movie production company Plan B along with movie makers D2 productions and Potboilers to bring the movie to our screens.
The Mexico City born Kenyan actress shot to fame last year after her role in slave movie 12 years a slave where she won the academy award for best supporting actress.
She has enjoyed a tremendous rise in fame in the past year building an image for herself as a fashion icon and an inspiration for young black women.
The actress was also named People magazine’s most beautiful person of the year this year and has received many other accolades in the past year.
Americanah is a book about the life of a young Nigerian woman who migrated to the United States. It revolves around the politics of hair, identity, romance and the experiences of African immigrants in the US.
The book has received international acclaim winning prizes including the National Book Critics Circle awards and has appeared in New York Times best books of 2013.
Adichie’s previous novel, Half Of A yellow Sun has also adapted for the screen by fellow Nigerian and British based Playwright Biyi Bandele.
