“Let my uterus breathe”- Toke Makinwa hits back at pregnancy rumours

by Azeezat F. Sulaiman

When is a good time to get pregnant and who decides?

Toke Makinwa is well known for her spirited outbursts and fans of her You- Tube Vlog know she’s never one to let one slide. On Tuesday, the petite media personality rounded up on critics asking when she intends to have a baby by basically telling them to f** off after her fellow presenter suggested she may be pregnant as she was too ill to work.

Toke who got married earlier this year to Maje Ayida in a low key ceremony blasted nosy family and friends for questioning  when she and her hubby intended to start a family.

In a series of tweets, the pint sized star bemoaned the constant pressure on newly wed African women to start a family immediately.

It’s not uncommon for families and friends to ask such questions in Nigeria. The enquiries start out being playful and harmless initially, but gradually start to bother on annoying or frustrating by the time women are one or two years into marriage. It’s a part of our culture that a woman must begin to procreate as soon as she gets married, but one would have hoped that recent strides in feminism would mean that women in Africa are seen as much more than baby making machines.

Surely it’s a woman’s prerogative when she chooses to start a family. What do you think?
