Getting fashion wrong has happened before, and will continue to happen. For the writers at NaijalivingUK – at one stage, neon socks were okay, and jelly shoes were acceptable and footwear and the pink top-skirt-tights-shoes combination looked the bomb. What we’re getting at is that we all sometimes look back on a style moment and think: ‘What were we thinking?’ and with the state of fashion in the 90s, some of our baby clothes makes us wonder: ‘What were our mothers thinking?’ All jokes aside, we’re here to point out a few of the many fashion no-no’s we should all abide by. So long fashion mishaps, and hello style fashionistas!
What better way to teach you fashion no-no’s, but by using celebrity examples – they get it wrong sometimes as well!
Mariah we love you, lets just clear that up, but a few of her fashion choices have made us wonder if she’s 43 or 23. The singer’s plunging necklines to mini skirts show that age does not govern her style. But whilst we admire her confidence and sexy attitude, we think the thigh slits are going a bit too far now.
Want to look sexy over 40? Of course you can! Invest in pencil skirts, boyfriend jackets; wrap dresses, and maxi skirts. No matter what your age, you can always look sexy – just don’t forget to keep it classy– 41-year old Gabrielle Union gets sexy right every time…
Don’t get us wrong, we would take comfort over anything, but it has to flatter our body shape. The beautiful Meagan Good was swamped in her chiffon Michael Costello gown. The draped detailing over her chest were not fitted enough so her upper body looked boxy, and large (and we all know Miss Good has a gorgeous toned body!). The looseness of the skirt coupled with the wide pleats widens her; the matronly neckline is just too high.It may be a comfortable dress but it does nothing for her. If you want comfort, that’s fine but avoid unflattering maxis like Megan’s and go for a fitted-loose alternative, we love Jessica Alba’s dress, it molds to her upper body with a tailored, flowing bottom.
You’re young! Why dress like your Gran now? While we appreciate Miley Cyrus covering up (for once), she looks frumpy. She swamped her petite frame in a black Jean Paul Gaultier maxi dress – whilst it would look fab on Helen Mirren, it’s not quite fit for 20-year old Miley. We like pre-Miley Cyrus’s style, the time when her tongue wasn’t hanging out, she looked stunning and youthful in this black number. When you’re young, dress like you are!
Just too much
We’ve all been there! But here are a couple of celebrity culprits:
The key is to not go overboard – double denim, too much jewellery, neon, garish prints all should be left for Halloween. Simplicity is always key, just look at Jessica Biel, Keke Palmer and Emma Roberts…
