Radio 1Xtra presenter Clara Amfo has been announced as the new voice you’ll be hearing on BBC Radio 1’s Chart show. Amfo takes over duties from Jameela Jamil from January 25, 2015.
Barely 15 months after joining BBC Radio 1Xtra from Kiss FM, the digital channel for urban music, the 28-year-old has already caught the eye of producers for her talent and work ethic.
Amfo who was announced as the iconic show’s new host on Monday told the Guardian’s Bim Adewumi that she couldn’t believe the news herself, when bosses first told her.
“It’s a big deal for me because I wasn’t expecting it. You have to understand that I only joined 1Xtra about 15 months ago,” she says. “I went in there thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to do the weekend breakfast show, that’s going to be great,’ and I thought there might be opportunities in other areas of the schedule. But I was just happy to do my weekend show, filling my week with voiceovers and getting on with it.”
Over the year, she took on more high-profile roles, standing in for the likes of Fearne Cotton and Matt Edmonson. When her boss, told her she was being considered to actually host the chart show, she says she paused for a second wondering if she heard right. Before saying, ‘Wow, OK. The Radio 1 chart show. Shit!’” “It still hasn’t fully sunk in yet, to be honest with you,” says Radio’s latest IT Girl.
Can finally breath out now! From January 25th,I have some more work to do and I'm EXCITED. @BBCR1's Official Chart
