Celebrities giving back to their fans, what’s wrong with that?

Who cares if it’s a publicity stunt?

In case you haven’t seen it yet, Taylor Swift a.k.a the country girl who now sings pop songs uploaded a video where she surprises her fans with gifts, and it’s gone viral…of course.

The Shake it Off singer filmed herself wrapping Christmas presents for some of her biggest fans in the run up to Christmas and then had them all delivered to them during the holidays. We’re not talking huge bags of rice (Ekiti state style), or wads of cash thrown into the crowd or bath bomb sets here. We’re talking really cool, thoughtful gifts that these fans actually wanted.

Swift stalked her fan’s social media pages; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and everything else in between to glean ideas about what each person cared about and the sort of present that would put a smile on their faces- I think we can all be in agreement that this is much more than can be said for a lot of presents most of us got this year from our nearest and dearest.

She then personally wrapped them, with the help of two of her cats, and sent them all off; With the exception of one. She surprised a fan, whom she had met previously by turning up on her doorstep to deliver her son a toy car, which she then proceeded to ride in with the little guy.

If that isn’t sweet, then I don’t know what is.

The 25 year old’s gesture has received mixed reviews online. While some have hailed it as a generous thing to do for a stupendously rich celebrity, others have dismissed it as a PR gimmick, done only for the purpose of self-gratification and obviously to boost her own profile. I suppose this is to be expected.

It’s not everyday you see celebrities stalking their fan’s Twitter pages in order to get a glimpse into their lives and find out what kind of person they are, and when they do, it definitely can’t be because this is possibly the only way they can get to know their fans or because they want to give something back. Celebrities are people with no heart after all.

For the sake of argument, let’s say the latter is true. So she’s done this gifting to make people like her more and hopefully, rush out to buy her next album when it’s out because let’s face it;

a) Her album sales in 2014 were so poor (1989 was 2014’s best-selling album),

b) She’s had very little publicity in 2014 (Victoria’s Secret fans would beg to differ) and

c) She needs to gain more fans on social media (50 million followers on Twitter is more than sufficient for one person I think).

Yes, celebrities do stuff for PR, but that sort of comes with the territory. But just because they’re rich and famous doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be human or that they’re so confident and pompous, they don’t have the same need to be accepted and loved or feel the need to reciprocate these emotions, just like the rest of us.

So she filmed the whole process and put it up for everyone to see, that still doesn’t take away the fact that it’s a beautiful thing that she’s done. Christmas is meant to be a time of giving and spreading joy and if this isn’t a perfect example of how to give back to people who have contributed to your wealth, then the world really must be barking mad. Let’s not take ourselves too seriously here. This is just someone with a lot of money and goodwill, having fun while making people happy.

I think the world would be a happier place without the cynicism.
