Still shaking her tail feather…even now
She’s a legendary rock singer, a woman who shook away an abusive husband, launched a hugely solo successful career and now, Tina Turner (real name Anna Mae Bullock) is celebrating another milestone- turning 75.
Popularly called the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner in her prime was a force to be reckoned with. She did with her music and talent what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is doing for feminism with her writing and arguably paved the way for other strong women like Beyoncé to chant that feminist song of equality and sticking up for what you believe in.
Discovered by ex husband Ike Turner in the 50’s, Tina and Ike’s band enjoyed huge success with hits including ‘River Deep- Mountain High‘, Proud Mary and A Fool In Love. The fairytale didn’t last long, however after Ike reports of domestic abuse surfaced. Being stuck in an abusive relationship for years could have destroyed her, but the fiery singer came back after a nasty divorce to launch an even more successful solo career.
Tina Turner enjoyed huge, huge success in the 80’s and 90’s with hits like Let’s Stay Together and Private Dancer, but perhaps everyone’s favourite Tina track is ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’. She also has a string of awards to her name with an enviable 8 Grammy Awards and album sales of around 100 million copies.
Not only is she famed for her unique voice and dance moves (she practically invented shaking the tail feather), Tina is famed for her perfect pins, which she never fails to show off during her energetic live performances- something else she’s famed for.
We celebrate you Tina- Shaggy hair, perfect body and all.
