Beauty Review- Cardiospermum gel from Skin Shop

Anyone with dry skin will tell you winter is the most dreaded time of the year, especially for women of colour. Winter is not kind to black skin at all, and looking after your skin during winter requires forward planning and some serious research if you intend to keep your sanity.  I’d give anything to keep the dry patches and itchiness that come with the harsh cold months at bay.

You can therefore imagine my excitement when we were offered the Cardiospermum Gel to review by the lovely guys at Skin Shop.

Cardiospermum Gel is a natural light body and face gel for treating itchy, dry and eczema-prone skin. The main ingredient, Cardiospermum is a concentrated extract from Cardiospermum halicacabum, known as the balloon plant or love in a puff. It’s a climbing plant widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia.

image003This gel has been receiving a lot of positive reviews online thanks to moms who’ve used it to treat their children’s dry skin conditions, and according to the brand, a UK trial has also found the product to be a helpful alternative to steroids for the treatment of very itchy skin, dermatitis and eczema.

Moisturising oil aside, I put the gel to test over a one week period. On application, it’s very soothing to the skin, kind of like the feeling you get when you apply aloe vera gel. My skin is very dry, and generally, products advertised as dry skin solutions tend not to function when used by people of colour, so I was quite sceptical about this gel doing anything for me initially.

Apart from its soothing effect, the gel is very light on the skin and does do what it says on the thin. Although after applying the gel, my skin didn’t have the usual tightness and itchiness it tends to have when I don’t use a moisturizer during winter, the gel, however, does dry up so much that, you won’t feel like you’ve got any cream on. This is probably because it gets absorbed right into the skin though.

In terms of treating dry skin conditions as a whole, I think it’s a great solution, but I would suggest topping it up with an oil or deep moisturizer if you’re like me and like a glossy feel to your skin all day long.
